Course descripton

This two-day in-depth training teaches you rules and procedures for creating accurate estimates and forecasts, negotiate them with the stakeholders, and make the estimation and forecasting analytical rather than political process. We discuss in details the definition of estimation, the estimation process and how to make it successful, various estimation techniques and forecast models, their applicability in different project phases, and the risks associated with them. We will uncover the power of Monte Carlo probabilistic forecasting and how it can help you to build your schedule and budget forecasts with negligible effort for your team members.
The training contains a lot of exercises to teach you the skills of creating different kinds of estimates and Monte Carlo forecasts for all kinds of projects - small, medium large in different phases of the project, regardless of approach are you use - Agile or traditional waterfall.

We will also review necessary Agile metrics and supporting charts like Cumulative Flow Diagram, Scatter plot, Histogram, and how to visualize and interpret them to access the level of reliability, precision and accuracy of the estimations and Monte Carlo forecasts, understand associated risks, and, finally, where to focus the overall process improvement activities.

This course is based on the work of Steve McConnel "Code Complete", "Software Estimation: Demystifying the Black Art", Mike Cohn "Agile Estimating and Planning", David J Anderson, Troy Magennis, and Dimitar Bakardzhiev. You will leave the training with a set of Excel Monte Carlo forecasting templates that you can start using the next day.

Note that the participants are expected (but not required) to have the basic knowledge of Agile and Lean concepts and have some practical experience in Scrum or Lean Kanban. Therefore it's recommended to complete following trainings before attending this course: Kanban System Design (KMP I), Team Kanban Practitioner (TKP), Scrum Master Foundations, or Scrum Product Owner Foundations.

Learning objectives

At the end of the class the participants will:

  • Understand the concepts of Estimation, Forecast, and Cone of Uncertainty, and critical role of historical data

Serhiy holds MBA degree from the Nyenrode Business University, The Netherlands, Master degree "cum laude" in Applied Mathematics from the Lviv State University, Ukraine and a number of professional certifications: Accredited Kanban Trainer (AKT), Kanban Management Professional (KMP), Team Kanban Practitioner (TKP) from the Lean Kanban University, Lean 6 Sigma Green Belt, Project Management Professional (PMP) from the Project Management Institute, Certified SCRUM Master (CSM) and Certified Scrum Professional (CSP) from Scrum Alliance, PRINCE2 Foundation from the APM Group.
